Visa, Permits & Restrictions

  • Visa Required: Foreign nationals must apply in advance.
  • Exceptions:
    • India – Entry permit issued on arrival (passport or voter ID required).
    • Bangladesh & Maldives – Visa on arrival at port of entry.
  • Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): USD 100 per person per night.
  • Passport Validity: Minimum 6 months required.
  • Travel Insurance: Strongly recommended.
  • Cultural Etiquette: Dress modestly, respect religious sites, smoking prohibited in public.

Entry Requirements: All international visitors must obtain visa clearance prior to arrival
through licensed Bhutanese tour operators.


Visas are stamped upon entry.
Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival.


Indian citizens can obtain an entry permit on arrival with a valid passport or voter ID card. Citizens of Bangladesh and the Maldives are eligible for visa on arrival at Bhutan’s ports of entry.


Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): Bhutan levies a daily Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) to support environmental conservation and cultural preservation. The current SDF is USD 100 per person per night, applicable to all visitors including regional travellers.


Travel Arrangements: Travel packages typically include accommodation, meals, transport, and a licensed guide. Independent travel is not permitted; visitors must book through authorized operators.


Health and Safety: Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies is strongly recommended. Visitors to high-altitude regions should take precautions against altitude sickness. Bhutan maintains strict hygiene and safety standards for travellers.


Cultural Etiquette: Guests are requested to dress modestly when visiting monasteries and religious sites. Photography may be restricted inside certain religious sites. Smoking in public places is prohibited by law.


Special Permits and Restrictions: Travel to certain remote regions and trekking routes in Bhutan requires special permits issued by the Tourism Council of Bhutan. These permits are arranged through licensed tour operators. Restricted areas include border regions and high- altitude trekking zones. Independent trekking is not allowed; all treks must be organized with authorized guides and support staff. Visitors should be aware that some areas may have seasonal restrictions due to weather or environmental conservation measures.
